How to Use Binoculars when You are Bird Watching

How to use binoculars

You might think that the easiest way to locate a bird is to look through your binoculars, and search the general vicinity, hoping to locate some bird activity. Actually the most successful way is to first carefully listen if you can hear some song or other vocalizations. Secondly is to follow the song and determine where it is the loudest. Once you see some slight movement, it is important that you face the bird, keep your head and body very still, and lift the binoculars to your eyes. You should have the bird in perfect view at this time.

For some extra stability, you can either wedge a finger against your forehead, or if it feels better you can wedge the thumb against your chin. If there is a tree branch available you can rest your arms against it. Always remember to use a strap on your binoculars so you can carry them around your neck, and are ready for action at all times. Also remember to clean the eyepieces, you can either use a soft brush or just blow on them to keep any sand or dust off, to make sure you do not scratch them before you wipe them with a lens tissue.

A great tip is also to leave your binoculars in its case for a few minutes, after you have been using them inside a cool room to exit to a much warmer outside. This will prevent or reduce the degree of fogging which will occur when the water condenses on the cold lenses. HAVE FUN!!!
