Screech-Owls

(Otus asio)
Strigidae

The Screech Owl has a pale greenish or gray bill with whitish bill tip, ear tuffs (may be inconspicuous on young birds), two color phases witch are reddish brown, and grey, and an underside witch is relatively strongly barred. Its length is 7-10in (18-25cm) Its wingspan is 20in (50cm) Its voice is a mournful whinny or wail of tremulous, and descending in pitch, sometimes in a series on a single pitch. Their eggs are pure white with 1 clutch consisting of 4-5 or (2-7) eggs. Both male and female incubate for about 26 days and fledging time is around 27 days. Both male and female feed their young.

Male and female look alike.

The Screech-Owl and other owls look like wise secretive old men of the forest, with their intense stare, and deliberate slow movements, and alert attitude of concentration, makes them truly unique among other birds. This common and familiar small owl can be found across most of the country, but are especially abundant in sparse woods, mesquite deserts, and streamside forests. They will also visit suburban backyards if there are suitable nesting opportunities and nest boxes available.

Look out for the owl’s calling card, an elongated grayish lump (pellet) witch will show evidence of its last meal, such as undigested fur, feathers, and bones. Look for large, soft feathers (striped, and brown and white) on the ground as well, hold it up against the light, and if it appears softly furred instead of sleek, and shiny you probably have been visited by an owl.

The Screech-Owl will begin feeding early in the morning, and continue long into the night, on insects, birds, and small mammals. They need very good vision to hunt at night, and their unusually large eyes are a great asset of course. During the daytime the bright light can become very annoying to the large sensitive eyes, so therefore they are equipped with a special third eyelid (like a window shade), they can draw over the unprotected eyes to keep out the sun.

Owls do not only hunt by sight but also by using their keen ears witch are holes located on the side oh the head. The ears are not visible, they are usually hidden under feathers, that the owl can shift and form into funnels witch will pick up even the slightest sounds. They also have a round face called a “facial disk”, and it kind of works like that of a satellite dish witch can focus in, and pick up bits of sounds in its surroundings.

Their wings are also adapted to be almost noiseless to help them be successful in night-hunting. The front edge of the first long wing feathers are softly serrated witch lets the saw-toothed edge have air pass through it, to make them completely soundless.

If you like to attract the Screech-Owl and other owls to your lovely bird feeding garden, plant dense conifers such as spruces, hemlocks, and firs. Put up birdhouses with an entrance hole measuring 3inches, for the Barn Owl and other owls 6inch holes. If you have a large naturalistic landscaping where rabbits, shrews, and mice can make their homes in, will be a definite plus as well.
