Educate Yourself About the Yaupon Holly and Its Visiting Birds

Yaupon Holly

Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria) is a great choice for a wildlife hedge. Its hedge will create a great nesting site in your backyard or garden for needy birds. The Yaupon Holly produces bright red fruit in the fall, and birds like the Brown Thrasher, the Northern Mockingbird and the Gray Catbird are especially attracted to it. Put up some hanging bird feeders filled with treats, when the plant is not bearing fruit is a good idea, for always hungry little birds.

The Yaupon Holly can tolerate some shade but likes full sun the best with nice moist soil. It can grow up to “between” 15-25ft (4.5-7.6m), and will have a spread of around 10-15ft (3-4.6m). Another shrub you might consider is the Carolina Holly (I. ambigua), and it likes dry to moist soils.
