Educate Yourself Aout the Sweetgum and Its Visiting Birds

Sweetgum

Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) is a fast-growing deciduous tree, and is beautiful in the fall, with its red and orange colored leafs. Its fruits are a favorite of at least 21 different kinds of birds, and the Evening Grosbeak, Bobwhite, Northern Cardinal, and Mourning Dove are fond of its seeds when they are available. Hanging some decorative bird feeding houses or placing some unique bird feeding tables in or around this tree might add to its beauty in your backyard or bird feeding garden.

The Sweetgum prefers sun to half sun, and likes moist, slightly acid, well-drained soil. This tree should be pruned during the winter time; it is also highly disease-resistant, but not tolerant of pollution. The Sweetgum will grow up to “between” 50-120ft (15-36m), and has a spread of 40ft (12m).
