Educate Yourself About the River Birch and Its Seed-eating Birds

River Birch

River Birch (Betula nigra) is a drought-resistant, tough tree, and will adapt to extreme conditions. Winter finches, such as Pine Siskins and the Common Redpolls will readily feed on these seeds, one of their very favorites.

The River Birch does best in moist, acid soils with pH of 6.5 or under, but will be okay in other conditions and transplants very well. It will grow up to “between” 50-80ft (15-25m), and will have a spread of around 40-60ft (12-18m). A great alternative is the Sweet Birch (B. lenta), and this tree will adapt to both deep, moist, fertile soil and very rocky spots as well.
