Educate Yourself About the Oregon grape Holly and Its Visiting Birds
Oregon Grape Holly
Oregon grape Holly (Mahonia aquifolium) is an ever-green shrub, with beautiful clusters of yellow insect-attracting flowers in spring time, and lovely blue-black berries in fall and winter time. Its fruit are eaten by many different species, like the Hermit Thrushes, the Ruffed and Blue Grouse, and the Northern Bobwhites. Putting a lovely stone bird bath next to this shrub, will provide protection a privacy to timid, little bathing chickadees, and titmice in your lovely bird feeding garden.
The Oregon Grape Holly will grow in moist, acidic, well-drained soil, can tolerate full sun, if it is protected from drying winds, but prefers full to partial shade. It will grow to a size of “between” 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m), and have a spread of around 6ft (1.8m).
