Educate Yourelf About the Lowbush Blueberry and Its Visiting Birds

Lowbush Blueberry

Lowbush Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifium) is a beautiful, spreading, and deciduous shrub, you must consider for your garden or backyard. Its pretty blue berries are enjoyed by at least 37 different kinds of birds like the Gray Catbird, the Northern Mockingbird and several spices of thrush. Adding a unique looking birdbath or maybe a decorative bird feeding table in the middle or next to this pretty shrub, might make a nice conversation piece.

The Lowbush Blueberry likes full sun, and will do best in well-drained, acid soil. It will grow up to “between” 1-2ft (.3-.6m), and have a spread of about 2ft (.6m). Another blueberry is the Dwarf Blueberry (V. caespitosum) and it is a dense suckering plant that can grow in drier infertile soil, but definitely prefers granite-based, acid, well-drained soil.
