Educate Yourself About the Longleaf Pine and Its visiting Birds
Longleaf Pine
Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris) was once widely distributed on sandy soils near the southeastern coast. This tree is definitely an eye catcher, with its long graceful needles and tall slender trunk. This tree is often used as a nesting tree and its seeds are very important to birds like cardinals, Tufted Titmice, and Brown-headed Nuthatches. Putting up some decorative rustic nesting boxes on the tree, might make some birds interested to nest in your friendly bird feeding garden.
The Longleaf Pine favors full sun, and different kind of soils like sandy to poor, acid, and is salt-tolerant. This tree will grow up to “between” 100-125ft (30-38m) and will have a spread of around 40ft (12m). Some alternatives are the Shortleaf Pine (P. echinata) witch is a fast-growing tree that will do fine in a variety of different soils, and also likes full sun.
