Educate Yourself About the Live Oak and Its Acorn-eating birds
Live Oak
Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) is a majestic looking tree and its acorns are consumed by at least 15 different kinds of birds. It is a favorite of the Wood Duck, the Northern Bobwhite, the Florida Scrub Jay, and the Red-headed and Red-cockaded Woodpecker. Putting up an oriole hummingbird feeder might make some thirsty hummingbirds happy in your bird feeding garden.
The Live Oak is a fast growing tree, and will do great in a variety of different soils, but prefers sandy soils and tolerates salinity. It will grow up to 50ft (15m), and has a spread of about 60-100ft (18-30m). Another tree you might consider is the Swamp Chestnut Oak (Q. michauxii), and it prefers moist areas.
