Educate Yourself About the Cabbage Palmetto and Its Visiting Birds
Cabbage Palmetto
Cabbage Palmetto (Sabal palmetto) is a native from North Carolina to Florida. This plant thrives in prairies and mixed with pines on sandy soils. A variety of different birds like to feed on the clusters of black small fruits, especially the American Robin. The Cabbage Palmetto prefers sun, and tolerates a wide range of soils with different moisture levels. It will grow up to 80ft (24m), and has a spread of around 12-18ft (3.7-5.5m).
There are a few alternatives you might like such as the Dwarf Palmetto (S. minor), it grows best in sunny places, and a variety of soils, including sand. Then you have the Scrub Palmetto (S. etonia), and this is a plant that tolerates long droughts in sandy soils and full sun.
