Educate Yourself About the Bunchberry and Its Visiting Birds
Bunchberry
Bunchberry (Cornus Canadensis), with its large white flowers, and whorls of oval leafs, makes this a very pretty ground cover. Ground-feeding birds, such as the veery, will feed on its clusters of bright red berries. This is a hard plant to establish, but sending out rhizome, can make it spread quickly. Putting out a unique looking bird feeding table in the middle of this ground cover, will make it picture perfect in your bird feeding garden.
The Bunchberry is slow-growing, and likes shade with cool, moist, acid soil. It will grow to less than 1ft (.3m), and have a spread of 2ft (.6m). A great alternative or addition would be the Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) ground cover. This evergreen grows up to less than 1ft (.3m) tall, and likes cool, moist soil in shady areas.
