Educate Yourself About the American Holly and Its Visiting Birds
American Holly
American Holly (Ilex opaca) can live up to 200 years, and is a very slow-growing and long-lived tree. The American Holly bears bright red fruit, and at least 12 different kinds of birds feed on its fruit. Birds like the Cedar Waxwing, and the Eastern Bluebird are very interested visitors too. By cutting some branches at the bottom of the tree, and clearing leaves and twigs, will make an excellent area to put out extra goodies like seeds and nuts in your bird feeding garden.
The American Holly likes full to partial sun, and will grow in all kinds of different soils. It will grow up to “between” 40-50ft (12-15m), and has a spread of about 20-40ft (6-12m). An alternative is the Large Gallberry (I. coriacea) and it likes the same conditions as the American Holly.
