Educate Yourself About the Green Ash and Its Visiting Birds
Green Ash
Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) is a pretty, yellow flowering tree, tolerant of city conditions, and a wonderful choice for a backyard or bird feeding garden. Many different birds like its seeds, but are a favorite of the Purple Finches, and the Pine Grosbeaks. Placing a decorative bird feeding table next to this pretty tree, might get some attention from interested birds like the Tufted Titmouse.
The Green Ash likes full sun to some shade, and moist to dry, well-drained soil, but will do fine in drought, high pH values, and salt too. It will grow up to “between” 30-50ft (9-15m), and have a spread of around 70ft (21m). Another great choice is the Pumpkin Ash (F. profunda), and this tree can grow twice as high as the Green Ash, with a beautiful narrow open crown. It likes full sun, to some shade, and grows great in moist, swampy places.
