Educate Yourself About the Box Elder and Its Visiting Birds

Box Elder

Box Elder (Acer negundo) is a winter-hardy maple that can handle extreme conditions, and temperatures, and is also an excellent choice to plant as a shelterbelt. The evening Grosbeak prefers its food, but other birds will snack on the Box Elder as well. Putting out some designer hanging bird feeders or a unique looking bird feeding table, might interest your neighbors to turn their garden into a bird feeding one too.

The Box Elder is a fast-growing but short-lived tree; which likes sun or shade, and will tolerate poor soils, but prefers moist soil. It will grow up to “between” 50-75ft (23-25m), and will have a spread of around 50-80ft (15-24m). Another great choice is the Vine Maple (A. circinatum), and this is a small tree, or dwarf shrub that does well in moist areas.
