Educate Yourself About the Black Hills Spruce and Its Visiting Birds

Black Hills Spruce

Black Hills Spruce (Picea glauca var. densata) is a native variety of the White Spruce, and is an extremely dense and hardy tree. The Black Hills Spruce is a great choice for the northern plains, and has an abundance of food for birds like the crossbills and the Evening Grosbeaks. This tree also provides great cover for nesting birds, against predators like crows and falcons and hawks.

The Black Hills Spruce likes full sun to some shade, and needs moist soil. It can be transplanted easily, and is more resistant to winter desiccation than the Colorado Blue Spruce. It will grow up to 70ft (21m), and has a spread of around 10-20ft (3-6m). The White Spruce (P. glauca) is also a great choice for the northern plains, and it likes full sun, and does well in different kind of soils.
