Educate Yourself About the Ponderosa Pine and Other Pines

Ponderosa Pine

Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa) is a great tree for larger and smaller properties. If you have many acres with open country, it can be planted to create a shelter belt, or if you have a smaller lot, you might plant them in a row up a driveway.

The Ponderosa Pine will provide cover through out the year, and its very small, abundant seeds will provide food for many different kinds of birds, such as the Chestnut-backed Chickadees. This tree can live for over 150 years, and will adapt to a wide range of elevations and soils. The Ponderosa Pine will have good seed crops, occurring every two to five years.

It will do well in both full sun to part shade, and likes all kinds of different soils, including deep, dry and well-drained. It can grow up to 150 ft (45m), and has a spread of around 61-76ft (20-25m). Another great choice is the slow-growing Red Pine (P. resinosa), and it will grow up to “between” 65-100ft (20-30.5m) tall.
