Educate Yourself About the Hackberry and Its Visiting Birds

Hackberry

Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is a great tree for backyards and open pastures. It is a deciduous tree (sheds its leaves every year), and at least 24 kinds of different birds such as the Northern Cardinal and Northern Flicker, enjoy its purple fall fruits. Putting up some decorative hanging bird feeders on the Hackberry’s branches, filled with different treats, will greatly be appreciated by your visiting birds in your charming bird feeding garden.

The Hackberry likes full sun to shady spots, and a range of different soils, from dry rocky to sandy ones, with almost any pH values. It is very drought-resistant as well, and can grow up to “around” 30-50ft (9-15m), and have a spread of about 50ft (15m). Here is another choice, the Dwarf Hackberry (C. tenuifolia), and it likes to grow in gravelly, rocky soils on bluffs and foothills.
