Educate Yourself About the Downey Serviceberry and Its Perching Birds
Downey Serviceberry
Downey Serviceberry (Amerlanchier arborea) is a very attractive little tree with slight pink flowering when in bloom. This tree is great for backyards and forest edges, and 19 different kinds of birds feed on its ripe fruit in early summer time. This fruit is especially attractive to birds like the Wood Thrush, and the Scarlet Tanagers, who will readily feast on it. Putting up a great looking, hanging tube feeder, when the Downey Serviceberry is not producing, will certainly bring more birds to your lovely bird feeding garden.
This tree likes full sun to some shade, and will do excellent in acid, well-drained soil, but can do well in a variety of different soils as well. The Downey Serviceberry will grow up to “between” 20-40ft (6-12m), and has a spread of about 30ft (9m). A great alternative is the Allegheny Serviceberry (A. laevis), and it reminds you of the Downey Serviceberry, and has the same growing requirements.
