Educate Yourself About the Paper Birch and Its Seed-eating Birds

Paper Birch

Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) is a decorative spreading tree and has excellent winter food for at least 12 different birds. Birds like Pine Siskins, juncos, chickadees, and goldfinches love to feast on its seeds. Under the tree branches you can prepare a little area by removing leafs and twigs and putting out seeds and other goodies for the birds that are ground feeders in your bird feeding garden.

The Paper Birch has lots of seeds every one or two years, and grows best in sun to half sun. It prefers moist and well-drained soils as well. It will grow up to “between” 50-80ft (15-24m) and will spread about 30ft (9m). Other choices are Sweet Birch (B. lenta), it is more shade tolerant and will adapt to moist, fertile, and rocky soils. The Yellow Birch (B. allegheniensis), prefers cool, moist, well-drained soil.
