Educate Yourself About the Gray Dogwood and Its Shelter Seeking Birds

Gray Dogwood

Gray Dogwood (Cornus racemosa) provides excellent food, cover and nesting opportunities because of its denseness. At least 16 different birds will visit this shrub in the fall, like the Grey Catbird. They will feast on the Gray Dogwoods white berries with delight. Remember that, when you put out bird tables and bird feeders, do not put up bird houses to close to each other, in your bird feeding garden. The nesting birds like privacy and quit when they have their young.

This plant is great for both the city and the country and will make a nice hedge as well. The Dogwood likes full sun to partial shade, with different kinds of soils from swampy to well-drained. It will grow up to “between” 10-15ft (3-4.5m) and have a spread of around 10-15ft (3-4.5m). There are some alternatives like the Leaf Dogwood (C. alternifolia), its short-lived but fast-growing, and likes partial shade.
