Educate Yourself About the Crabapples and Its Many Bird Attracting Cultivars

Crabapples

Crabapples (Malus sp.) is a tree that has many cultivars of crabapples to chose from. Select the trees that have small, winter-persistent fruits and this fruit is very important to many different kinds of birds. It is also a good idea to hang some tubular hanging bird feeders in the tree when it is not bearing fruit.

Crabapple tolerates all kinds of well-drained soil, and likes open sunlight. They can also be pruned as hedges. The Crabapple will grow to “between” 10-50ft (3-15m) and will have a spread of around 10-20ft (6-7.5m). There are some alternatives like the Common Apple (M. pumila), and it prefers sunny places with clay loam, but will grow nicely in any soil as well.
