Cowberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) belongs to the blueberry family, and has beautiful red berries every spring. This berry is enjoyed by the White-throated Sparrows and many other ground feeding birds.

The Cowberry likes open, to partially shaded area with well-drained, dry soil. It will grow less than 1ft (.3m) and its spread is indefinite by suckers. Some alternative are Bog Billberry (V.uliginosum) and it likes shallow soil.Another one is the Dwarf Blueberry (V. caespitosum), and it likes acid, to well-drained soil.
