Educate Yourself About the Bearberry and Its Berry-eating Birds

Bearberry

Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is an evergreen, low-growing shrub. Before its abundance of red berries is available for the ground feeding birds, it produces a very pretty pink flower. The red berries are a favorite to birds like the Fox Sparrow, and the Ruffed Grouse.

The Bearberry will do excellent in very poor soil, but definitely prefers well-drained acid soil. It will grow to less than 1ft (.3m), and will have a spread of around 2-4ft (.6-1.2m). An alternative is the Alpine Bearberry (A. alpine).
