Educate Yourself About the American Elderberry

American Elderberry

American Elderberry (Sambucus Canadensis) has small beautiful white flowers that grow in clusters. The suckers can be removed to prevent the plant from forming thickets .Its fruit is purple in color and attracts at least 23 different kinds of birds. The Veery, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and the American Robin prefers this purple fruit. Always put out your bird feeding tables next to trees or shrubs, this will give the birds a chance to hide somewhere, when danger is lurking.

The American Elderberry is a short-lived but fast-growing shrub, and likes moist soil. It can grow up to “between” 3-10ft (.9-3m) and will have a spread of about 12ft (3.7m). An alternative is the Red Elder (S. pubens).
