Protect Your Wild bird Food Aganist Unwanted Squirrels

Unwanted Squirrels in your garden

You can get hanging birdfeeders that have special devises to keep unwanted guests away from your hanging birdfeeder. There will always be squirrels, chipmunks and other little critters willing to steal from the different delights you have filled your hanging birdfeeder with. These little guys can jump gaps of up to 6 feet (2m) and climb the smallest, thinnest branches to reach the desired food. They can also chew of the string from the hanging birdfeeder and drag the whole birdfeeder with them.

On your hanging birdfeeder it is also a good idea to find metal reinforced openings, or try to do it your self if the design of your hanging birdfeeder permits you. The squirrel is a smart little guy and will chew a larger opening for him to fit through. You can also put a metal guard around your hanging birdfeeder, but make sure that metal guard is far enough out so the squirrel can not reached the treats with his little arms.

There are also simple things like the “squirrel baffle”, a pivot, an umbrella looking device that will tip over, when the squirrel tries to get on top of it. It is very effective and quite entertaining to watch.
