Learn How to Protect Your Wild Birdseed
Unwanted large birds in your garden
You will sometimes have some unwanted guests like jays and other larger birds in your bird feeding garden, which will often eat most of the seeds and leave very little leftovers for the smaller birds. There are hanging birdfeeders with a feeder guard around it, made of 2x2 in welded wire, and this will only permit the smaller birds which can easily slip trough the wire and enjoy the feast.
Sparrows as you know can be bothersome, they will build nests in your chimney and clog it up or in your attic if they can find an opening somewhere. They will come and visit your hanging birdfeeder as well. It is really not a big problem, unless you do not want them visiting. You can fill your hanging birdfeeder with red proso millet, Niger thistle and peanuts and that will keep the sparrows away since these seeds are not to their liking.
You might see Starlings at your hanging birdfeeder as well, but do not be too concerned if they are filled with seeds since the starling like suet much better. If you have hanging birdfeeders filled with suet remember that the starling will dominate that particular feeder and give little chance for other suet eaters to enjoy this treatSparrows, starlings, cardinals, juncos and towhees prefer to feed on the ground, so that will keep them busy and away from your hanging birdfeeders.
