You will see hummingbirds in your bird feeding garden, even though you have not put out any sugar-water feeders for them. Sometimes you will notice that when you are using a hose, watering in your garden, they will come and check you out. Hummingbirds are attracted to your backyard garden because you have flowers in it, but there are plants that hummingbirds are more attracted to then others. So, here is a list of hummingbird friendly plants.
But first, here are some tips you might want to use, in planning your hummingbird feeding garden: Outline on a piece of paper, your property, and where the best place would be to put, and view the garden from. Also how large of a garden you want, and where you might want to place trellises, containers, ceramic pots and window boxes and so on. Maybe you want to create a dimensional look, or maybe add a small pond with a waterfall running into it.
Now, it is very important that you try to favor native plants, because showy cultivars often have very little nectar in them. Also, pick plants that have tubular flowers, they will usually come in red or orange colors. These plants usually have more nectar sources that attracts insects, which is a big diet of hummingbirds, and flowers that has a sweet smell to them, usually have very little nectar in them as well. Also remember to pick plants that are nectar-producing from early spring to late fall.
If you want your hummingbirds to stay around for as long as possible, plant trees, bushes and hummingbird friendly wines witch will provide opportunities for shelter and nesting places. It does not matter how much food you provide for them, because if there are no nesting places, they will leave when it is time to make new little hummingbirds.
Always keep a source of water available, such as a decorative birdbath with dripping or misters devices attached to it, in your lovely bird feeding garden. Never, never use insecticides, since hummingbirds are extra vulnerable to garden poisons, because of their high intake of insects.
