How to Create Layers of Planting
How to create layers of planting
Create layers of planting, by stepping increasingly shorter plants towards your home in this way:Tall trees, shorter trees, tall shrubs, short shrubs, wildflower meadow and lawn. Find on your property where you have more space, plant shrubs in clumps, putting at least three of each different plant together to make a border around your property. Make sure that the border contains several different spices to provide a variety of food and shelter, and nesting.
It is important to adapt to local conditions, when it comes to maintaining a successful bird garden. This will minimize upkeep and expenses a lot. By using bird friendly plants that are sympathetic to local conditions like soil type, shade and weather, will make it easier for you to care for your plants.
To make an example:If you live in the arid southwest, pick plants that require little water (xerophytes), or maybe you have thin soil near rock outcrops, you can plant ground covers as Creeping Junipers (Juniperus horizontalis), and, or Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) that provide food for the birds.
If your garden is shady, you can plant native wild flowers, and other shade liking plants, like ferns, and ground covers, and encouraging vines like Wild grape, and Virginia creeper to climb your trees.
It is very important to choose plants that are weather resistant. If you have not chosen the right plants for your bird garden, and suddenly there might be extreme weather changes, with very high or low temperatures, it could kill some of your expensive plants. So, therefore always select plants that belong to their hardiness zone.
Something to also remember is, that it is always better to grow southerly plants facing the south of the hill, or of your house, since there will be more hours of daylight, than the northern side.
