Learn How to Build a Pool for Birds
Build your own pool for birds
This in-ground pool for birds might be a fun project for a warm spring afternoon.
1. First go outside and find a spot you like for the in-ground bird pool. Try to pick a sunny open area at least 10ft (3m) across.
Use a spade to dig a shallow circular, (or any form you like), about 3ft (0.9m) in diameter. Make the hole about 6in (4cm) deep at the center and taper it to about 4in (3cm) deep at the edges.
2. If you like a more natural look, you can remove the turf around it, to create a beach-like area.
3. Use the directions on the bag to mix the cement with the right amount of water, and when you have mixed it well, pour it into place in the depression, making it about a 3in (2cm) thick layer.
4. Use the stiff scrub brush to drag it over the cement to make a ridged surface (the birds will have a better foot hold).
5. When the cement has set, you are ready to install the recirculating pump, and amke sure to follow the instructions on burying the electrical cord correct. Set the pump to burble at the water’s surface, to create a gurgle of moving water.
6. Now you can decorate the beach area around it. First put down some black landscape plastic to block weeds from growing, and cover it with a layer of river gravel. Then you can add some decorative rocks and or stone figures around the edges of the in-ground pool for birds, and fill it up with fresh water.
7. Now, stand back and admire your work, it is well deserved, and will also be greatly appreciated by visiting birds on hot summer days. HAVE FUN!!!
Also remember that this is a pool for spring, summer, and fall use, since the cement can crack if the water freezes in the winter time. If you like to use the bird pool during the winter there are de-icers available. They come in different size, so read on the packaging for how much water it will keep thawed.
