Learn How to Make Bird Cookie Cutter Treats

Cookie Cutter Treats

This is a great idea; create some fun projects for yourself and your kids, and make cookie cutter treats for your lovely fine feathered friends. You can use any cookie cutter you or your children prefer, for example: star-shaped, Santa Claus shaped, or reindeer shaped ones for Christmas time, and flower shaped, palm tree shaped, or even bird shaped ones for the summer time. Here is a recipe you can use in your bird feeding garden, for your little bird friends: You will have a choice of either 6 cups millets, 1 cup flaxseeds, and 1 cup black oil sunflower seeds or 4 cups chopped unsalted peanuts, and 2 cups black oil sunflower seeds. Then add 1 tablespoon butter, ½ cup sorghum or molasses, ¼ cup sugar.

Now, all you need is a candy thermometer and follow these instructions:

1) Put a waxed paper under the molds and spray it liberally with nonstick cooking spray.

2) Combine one of the seed mixes in a large bowl.

3) Melt the butter in a large saucepan, and then add the molasses and sugar.

4) Stir until the sugar is dissolved.

5) Bring to a boil and then cover, and cook for about 3 min. without stirring.

6) Uncover, and continue to boil without stirring until syrup reaches 290 degrees on the candy thermometer, and then pour it immediately over the seed mix.

7) Stir the mixture with a strong, long-handled wooden spoon, until the syrup and seed mixture is evenly blended.

8) Spoon the bird seed mixture into the cookie cutters you have chosen.

9) Now, grease your fingers, and press the mixture very firmly into the molds, until the seed mixture is at least ½ inch thick in the molds. Try to work fast and have some cold water next to you, because the molasses will be hot.

10)Thread a large upholstery needle or use a string of wire, and poke trough the bird treat to hang where ever you and the children wishes. If the mixture has hardened too much, heat the top of the needle or the wire with an open flame, to make it easier to insert.
