Learn How to Build Simple Martin Housing Using Bottle Gourds
Homemade Martin gourds
Here are instructions on how to build Martin housing with bottle gourds:
First you dry out gourds in the size of about 8-14in (20-35cm) thoroughly.
Then you cut out a 2 1/8in (5cm) entrance hole through the middle of the side.
Just below the neck, cut out a hole large enough, so you can reach in and clean out all the seeds.
Use an opaque (see trough) lid from a plastic kitchen container, and cut it into size and use silicon caulk to hold the lid in place for the upcoming season.
Then you drill 5/8in (1.5cm) holes in the bottom of it, so there will be ample drainage.
Also drill a set of 1/4in (6mm) holes at the top of the neck, so you can hang your gourd
Now, you are ready to paint the gourds exteriors, and use white latex paint to reflect heat on hot summer days. (You can buy special gourds paint in stores as well.)
When it is dry you can start looking for a place to hang it, if you have a pond, a stream, and or river, any open water, near by will be the best place for it. Otherwise hang it where ever you please.
Make sure you hang it about 14ft (4m) atop a pole, and that it is at least a 40ft (12m) open area around and away from buildings an any overhangs since these can give a perfect access to hungry predators like cats, and raccoons.
Remember that if you are lucky enough to attract these birds to nest in your backyard, they like to nest in groups, therefore build a few gourd houses so you can hang them together.
