Various Types of Bird Feeders
Bird Feeder Placement
There are many different kinds of birdfeeders, from basic ones, to very hip and stylish, but no matter what they look like, their purpose is to feed hungry little birds. Here are some choices of birdfeeders: Hanging birdfeeders, hanging hopper feeders, hanging tube feeders, hanging feeders with multiple feeding ports, metal enforced port birdfeeders, and pole mounted bird tables, hanging tube feeders with metal feeder guard, hanging birdfeeders with “squirrel baffle”, copper holders for suet puddings, caged hoppers, hanging bird tables, and ground-feeding tables.
It is of course lovely to be able to watch your feathered friends from your kitchen window or your living room, eating from hanging birdfeeders. But always remember to hang your birdfeeder at least 3 feet from any window, to avoid any accidents. If the hanging birdfeeder is to close to the window, the bird will have no chance of altering its course and will crash into it.
Large windows will reflect the skies and large trees and make an illusion of open space for the bird. It is an excellent idea to hang mobiles, decals, or clinging charms on or next to the window to avoid such a tragedy. Around 1 billion birds in the US alone die each year from running in to windows.
When you put out your hanging birdfeeder in the garden or the backyard, make sure that the space around it has some protection like other trees, shrubs or bushes. This will make it harder for predators such as Cooper’s and Sharp-shinned Hawks to dash down and raid the birds feeding on the hanging birdfeeder. Unfortunately it will always be hard to keep cats, raccoons and skunks away from prowling around, but you do your best to keep such terrible encounters away from our little fine feathered friends.
